How To Delete Telegram Account

Over 500 million people use Telegram, a cloud-based instant messaging service that was released in 2013. Since its introduction, Telegram has grown significantly in popularity and user base.

Privacy concerns around Telegram

It’s interesting that there are a lot of messaging applications that prioritize privacy, such as WhatsApp, Signal, and others, but Telegram hasn’t always had it easy, particularly when it comes to its privacy service. This year, it was discovered that the software only offers protection to Telegram’s private chats and does not, by default, use end-to-end encryption. Users began to wonder if using Telegram was secure.

The procedures listed below can be followed if you’re seeking for a means to delete your Telegram account as well.

Steps to delete Telegram account on iPhone and Android Smartphone

Users using Android devices cannot directly cancel their accounts on Telegram. Users must therefore go through the deactivation process first.

  • Open Telegram on your mobile and click on the option ‘Settings’.
  • Select the option ‘Privacy and Security’.
  • Next, scroll down to the ‘If Away for section’ to automatically delete your account.
  • Now, select the time frame after which your Telegram account will be disabled forever. You can choose from 1, 3, 6 and 12 months. (By default, Telegram set this to 6 months).
  • Once done, if you do not use your Telegram account for the selected time frame, the app will permanently delete your account on Android and iPhone.

Point to note: If your Telegram account remains idle for the selected time frame, the Telegram account will be deleted permanently along with messages and contacts.

Steps to delete a Telegram account permanently using a web browser

Users might not want to wait so long to delete their Telegram accounts on Android or iPhone. Telegram thus provides a web browser alternative for account deletion.

  • Go to the ‘Telegram Deactivation’ page on any web browser using a PC or mobile.
  • Enter the phone number using which your Telegram account was created. Also, don’t forget to put the country code before the mobile number. Then click on ‘Next’.
  • Now, you will get an alphanumeric code on the Telegram mobile app. Enter the code to sign in to your Telegram account.
  • From the ‘Telegram Core’ section, click on the ‘Delete Account option’. You will also be asked to provide a reason for deleting your account. (This is optional).
  • Lastly, you need to confirm again to delete the Telegram account. Click on the option, ‘Yes, delete my account’ to end your association with the app.
